Why did I have hair transplants?
A little about me.....
I was around 18 when I first noticed losing my hair although even some of my earlier school photos showed signs of recession.
Hairloss is hereditary in our family - my Grandad lost most of his hair, my father the same and both my brothers are going the same way - my older brother has held onto his hair for much longer than I did and my younger brother has a high forehead and starting to lose his hair.
Recently, I have gone back through some old photos to see how my hair disappeared over the years.
It’s well worth looking at them as it shows clearly male pattern baldness and how it affected my confidence.

Although I was happy with my life, I always hated the fact that I had very thin, balding hair. In my 20's I ended up cutting it very short and then bleaching it white-blond. It's amazing how that covers up the fact that I had very little hair on top.
A few years ago, David Beckham shaved his head and started a trend. It was then I started clippering my hair a number 1 all over...thank you David!!
Hairloss affected my confidence, self esteem and I found myself not wanting to go out, be with friends (especially if they had hair) and I felt old.
Here's a couple of pictures of me aged 31:

The beginning of 2004 I started dating someone who was 6 years younger than me. The difference in ages was only 6 years but in looks was a lot more like 15. I wanted to look a bit younger or even my actual aged - although many people say that bald men are attractive and more virile, they still look years older than they actually are...that's unfortunately a fact of life.
During my twenties, I had spent a small fortune on lotions and potions to try and combat my hairloss and also looked into hair transplantation. Unfortunately none of the drugs worked and there was a lot of bad hype about hair transplants with some very well known celebrities having "doll's hair" implants and many other horror stories. Suffice to say, I decided not to pursue that idea but always kept an eye on the market.
More recently, as part of my "keeping an eye on the market" I came across a few different methods available that certainly seemed like the hair transplant market had advanced drastically and also many satisfied customers posing great results. I started looking seriously about having it done.
I decided firstly on the FUE method which would cost me around £8000. With this procedure I would have had a 2 day stay in Canada and promises of some fantastic results. I almost (and I mean almost) signed up until I came across the Choi method.
I'd researched the new "Choi Implanter" method before but to be honest, never thought it would take off due to the amount of staff needed to perform the operation and the time it takes to transplant up to 6000 hairs in one session.
After many emails and phone calls to the clinic in Athens I was 100% convinced that this was the method I wanted to go with and paid my deposit within a couple of days.
A couple of the factors that made me go with this Clinic were:
- The surgeons experience - he had performed over 3000 procedures
- 100% money back guarantee if it didn't work
- ONE session to get the results of multiple sessions with FUE and FUSS
- Talking to ex-patients ... incredibly reassuring
- The cost - almost £3000 less than the FUE
- The location
- ...plus a few other personal reasons.
It was an incredibly difficult decision to have this procedure done and I am sure there are many other guys out there in a similar predicament. Because of this, I decided to journal my whole experience from pre-op all the way up to a full head of hair to let others in on my experience.
During the beginning of 2005, I decided to book in for a second procedure. This was out of pure vanity as the results from my first procedure would have made anyone happy however I had always suffered from a high forehead in my teens - the name "slaphead" comes to mind.
I wanted my hairline lowered and although the surgeon rarely transplants hair into skin which never has hair before, I persuaded him this is what I wanted.
6 months after my second procedure, and my hair is superb, no high forehead, no baldness.
Finally, in 2006 I found out that the Surgeon had opened up his own purpose-built clinic in Athens and I just had to go over and see him and the new clinic. I did and persuaded him to do a final hair transplant on me. I'll never forget our conversation - I said "I want another procedure", he said "Where do you want the new hair - there's no room left" and I replied "look for a gap and fill it!"
I had my final procedure at the newly opened clinic in April and have never looked back.
Most men will be happy with one full session (as I was) however, because I had the time, money and desire for more, I really wanted to see if I could get a full thick head of hair with a low hairline (lower that I had in my teens) and more hair that I had in my early twenties.
The simple answer was "Yes I could" and "Yes I have".
So, a huge thank you to the Surgeon and his team at the Clinic for changing my life and giving me back my confidence, self esteem and good looks.
