The Pain Of A Hair Transplant

June 18, 2006

A majority of hair transplants are relatively pain free - this is sometimes hard for guys to comprehend.

After 3 procedures, I can say (hand on heart) that the pain levels were negligible and no worse than a check up at the dentist.

The hair transplant procedure starts with the removal of the donor hair.

The donor is a strip of hair/skin or small pockets? of hair/skin (FUE).

In order to be pain-free, the clinic gives you a pre-med and (via a catheter) an anaesthetist gives you a relaxing and anaesthetic solution.

The surgeon injects a lot of local anaesthetic into the donor area and you may feel the first injection this discomfort I felt on my first procedure and on my subsequent second and third procedures, I didnt feel a thing.

The surgeon will continue to inject anaesthetic along the whole donor strip (or area) but as the first injection would have numbed the area, you will not feel anything here at all.

During the removal of the donor strip/area you wont feel anything.

After the strip has been removed, you are stitched up again no pain.

Before the surgeon starts to transplant the grafts into the bald/thinning area, he will again inject your scalp with lots and lots of local anaesthetic.

Most of your scalp is numb at this stage but you may feel the first injection like a short, sharp scratch the injection at the top of my forehead I felt in my first procedure but I was asleep at this stage during my second and third procedures so obviously never felt a thing!

After the surgeon has finished, you are given pain killers for when the anaesthetic wears off although there really isnt much deed to take these after a day.

The bottom line is there is no or very little discomfort in a majority of hair transplants and for me, no pain.
