Hair Transplant Spots
July 11, 2006
On occasion, after 6 weeks, you may notice a couple of spots appearing now and then.
I had 6 after my 1st and 2nd hair transplant.
These are "Wens" which are small harmless cysts. It normally happens when the hair beneath the skin is trying to find a way out and is blocked. The body produces pus as a natural reaction. They are not painful but need to be dealt with.
Looking on the web, here is the official definition of a Wen.
Wens: Sebaceous Cysts - Steatomas.
These are slow-growing benign cystic cutaneous tumor-like formations.
They contain sebaceous material and are often found on the scalp (wen).
According to my GP, the best thing you can do with these spots is pop them then forget about them.
- Sterilise the head - Iodine shampoo is ideal (you will still have some left from the bottle the surgery gave you)
- Locate the wen and very gently squeeze inwards towards the wen. You will see the wen go a paler colour the more pressure is applied
- The wen will burst in 1 of 2 ways: The pus will leak out (and there'll be a lot - which is normal) or the pus will fire out vertically.
- Continue to squeeze the wen until blood can be seen. The blood will be very dark red.
- Sterilise the scalp with antiseptic or wash your hair again in iodine solution.
Although wens are relatively unavoidable, there are natural ways you can reduce the chances of getting them:
- Avoid fats (especially saturated fats), fried foods, cheese, chocolate, butter, margarine, and dairy products.
- Do not drink alcohol, don't smoke nor drink caffeine products.

This is overkill and in no way guarantees you won't get an occassional wen.
You will stop getting wens after all the hair (vellus stage) has come through which is normally 3 months.
