Hair Loss Powder

May 24, 2006

dermmatch

DermMatch is probably the best known and widely used powder to cover up thin and balding hair. I have been using DermMatch on and off since Christmas 2004 and have found it excellent for covering thin hair (especially whilst waiting for my transplanted hairs to come through).

How does it work?

One of the biggest giveaway signs when you have thin hair (for whatever reason) is the scalp becomes visible.
People with white, grey or very blonde hair normally look like they have denser hair coverage than people with dark hair if their hair is at a similar stage of thinning.

DermMatch is applied to the scalp (and hair) and is close to the colour of your hair thus giving an illusion that your hair is thicker - you cannot see your scalp therefore it must be covered by hair.

How does it look?

DermMatch is very realistic if applied well - less is definately more!
It masks the scalp and also eliminates shine therefore the hair looks thicker, fuller and denser.

How is it applied?

DermMatch is a compressed powder which turns to a cream when wet.
Here's my routine for applying the product:

  • Make sure you are ready - T-shirt or Jumper already on as this will rub off if you try and put clothes on after application.
  • Be in a well lit area (a bathroom normally has sufficient light)
  • Cover any surfaces in case of splatter (that is why the bathroom is perfect - tiles wipe clean!)
  • Open the compact on a flat surface
  • Thouroughly wet the sponge applicator (add the extension handle for better control)
  • Swirl the wet applicator in the compact - enough to cover one side of the sponge in coloured cream. (you may want to add spray conditioner to the sponge or compact at this stage for softer hair....I add my Justin Jay Spray on Conditioner)
  • Starting from the back, quickly rub the sponge applicator on the scalp - I use straight motions but you can use circular if it's more comfortable. Continue until your scalp is covered - REMEMBER LESS IS MORE.
  • Dampen sponge again and swirl in compact if necessary.
  • For the hairline, do exactly the same as for the rest of the scalp but be much lighter. Don't worry if some of the cream ends up on your forehead.
  • Wash out the sponge and close the compact.
  • Using a damp flannel (if the DermMatch is dark, try and get hold of a brown flannel) start from the front of the hair a remove the excess - apply more pressure to the hairline as this will help blend the product.
  • Repeat the removal until a natural effect is achieved. Remember - you are removing the product from the hair and the forehead - NOT the scalp!
  • Style as normal - if you use gel, wax or mud to style, this will increase the natural look even more.
  • Wash your hands and go out and party!

What are its faults?

DermMatch is a powder/cream and although will not come off in rain, it can still be messy.
If you sleep with it, you will wake up with a dirty pillow - get yourself a dark coloured bedset.
If you brush up against someone wearing white, they may be marked if the product rubs off.
If you scratch your scalp or brush your fingers through your hair (or aomeone else does it), it may rub off.

Where can I get more information?

DermMatch have there own website with before and after pictures and more details about the product, colours available and a great FAQ.
