Craig Mailer's Hair Transplant Diary

October 29, 2006

Another successful hair transplant story

hair transplant before and after

Crain before and after his procedure.

Craig, before his procedure used lots of hair darkner spray...very messy and a nightmare with white pillows and people wearing light colours - you just can't get too close in case of rub off!

I first got contacted by Craig a couple of months before my second procedure - a cracking guy who was thinking of having a transplant but had 1000 questions.

We must have spoke around 10 times during the 2 months and became good buddies exchanging emails, photos and regular phonecalls.

Craig flew to Athens on the 1st May and had his procedure on the 2nd May.
I flew to Athens on the 4th May which is where our friendship really took off the ground.

Anyway, Craig has very kindly voluteered to add some of his photos to headofhair to give another perspective of the whole procedure.

...hats off to you mate!

Pre-procedure to Week 5

Before the procedure

Me before the procedure with and without hair darkener.

Week 1

Well I have to say that I can’t quite believe how fast everything is healing up!! I ended up with a bit of bruising under my eyes but was very short lived and as you can see from this picture of me, almost gone now. It’s amazing how different I feel about myself and owe so much of that to the people at the clinic and Andy through being able to talk to people that really understand how distressing hair loss can be.

Week 2

OooooPs forgot to take some pictures as I was busy preparing to start my new job so apologies for that!! All I can say is that my scalp is starting to feel much better now as all the little scabs are starting to wash away now, which feels great

Week 3

Off the Iodine shampoo now and onto the baby shampoo as you have to keep it mild for the first couple of weeks but already hair feels a lot better and all of the little scabs that were hard to see anyway are now completely gone!! Had some shock hair loss due to the trauma to the scalp but was fully aware that this may happen and was to be expected. This should hopefully stop pretty shortly so I’m not worried at all and it should be known that not everyone experiences this, you just have to be aware that it can happen.

Week 4

As you can see, my hair is looking quite thin in area’s now due to the shock hair loss but extremely happy to report that it’s slowed down considerably now and almost stopped. Quite excited today as I have just had a years supply of Dutasteride delivered and now been on it for 4 days now. Dutasteride has apparently taken America by storm since being approved by the FDA and is apparently much more effective than Finasteride so I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Week 5

Can’t believe the difference in my hair this week! Feels much better, looks much better and my hair loss has stopped completely and I mean completely!! Even when washing my hair in the shower I’m finding that where I usually found my hands covered in hair that I have trouble finding even one. I’ve been on Dutasteride for 12 days now and initially it seems to be doing its job. Really excited about the future now that my hair loss is under control again, I can only but feel optimistic about how my transplanted hair will start popping through over the next couple of months and how good I’m sure it’s going to look!! I’m really glad that I did all the research about transplant before I had the Choi procedure performed on me as now I know that I certainly chose the best.

Week 6 to Week 10

Week 6

Things seem to be coming nicely and have noticed some new hairs starting to come through but tend to think that it’s most likely to be some of the shock hair loss starting to grow back as I believe that it usually grows back relatively quickly. I noticed a couple of small lumps on my scalp, which I subsequently squeezed and then applied some Savlon spray, which contains Iodine. This stuff is great and cleared them up in no time at all. Unfortunately these types of lumps are par for the course and are usually caused by ingrown hairs or at worst a graft, which has failed. The good news is that I have only had 3 of these lumps and considering I had 1400 grafts, I’m amazed.

Week 7

Just a couple of quick pictures but all is well and scalp feels really good. I have just started to use Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner which is absolutely amazing stuff. I had been using this prior to my transplant but had to stop using it for a couple of months until everything had settled down. The condition of my hair feels much better now and seems to be doing wonders for my scalp too.

Week 8

Had a couple of pictures taken by some people that I work with as it was my birthday, so we all met up in London and had the most amazing night. As you can see my face is a wee bit shiny, must have been the drink hahaha! Actually had a few compliments on my hair that night, as I hadn’t seen my colleagues for a few weeks so they were pretty impressed on how my hair was coming along.

Week 9

Just about to head off to the gym so took a few quick pictures just to let you see what’s going on. I had my haircut yesterday and my hairdresser said that he couldn’t believe that I had had a transplant, as he couldn’t see any scarring at all. He told me that one of his clients had a transplant about 7 years ago and the results were horrific! It’s amazing how much things have advanced in a short space of time and when it comes to advanced you can’t beat the Choi-Procedure!

Week 10

Took quite a few shots here so that you can compare them from week 5. I think that the overall condition of my hair is much better although I would have to say that not much in the way of transplanted hair has come through yet. However I know from the timelines explained to me and from Andy Hunts Journal that this should happen relatively soon. Off to Canada for 3 weeks on the 22 nd of July and will be visiting Calgary and Vancouver so hopefully will have some exciting pictures for you in my next 5 week report.

Week 11 to Week 16

Week 11

Managed to get a bit of sun in my face and hair is feeling and looking rather good too. If you haven’t already, then please try Nioxin Shampoo along with the Scalp Therapy (Conditioner) My hair feels great and looks nice & healthy with these products and can’t recommend them enough. Discovered a few little lumps & bumps, which I’m happy about, as I know now that this is more hair trying to push it’s way through.

Week 12

Hey, it’s all good news & happy days!! I’ve started to notice that my new hairline is starting to become more prominent and can actually see the transplanted hair starting to work its way in. Feeling really optimistic about the end result, which I know, is going to make a huge difference to my own self-esteem & confidence. I can’t begin to tell you how much better I feel knowing that all of the hair is my own and that I’m no longer using hair darkeners or thickening sprays anymore. Using hair-thickening sprays was the worst mistake that I ever made and would advise anyone against it. The reason being that as time goes by, you have to use more to give yourself enough coverage and it restricts you from doing so many everyday things like, going to bed without washing your hair, going swimming and doing anything that may involve working up a sweat as it can cause the thickening product to react with the sweat and look horrible, take my advise and don’t make that same mistake that I did.

Week 13

Had a go at making this weeks pictures more interesting so hope you like the backdrop! Hair seems to be coming on well and have noticed some further growth at both temples. I know that I still have lots to come through and can’t wait for the finished result which I’m confident will be nothing short of amazing! More excellent news as my hair loss seems to have completely stopped as I haven’t noticed any further recession and don’t see any in my hands when washing my hair anymore. The only three products that I believe in and have been absolutely awesome for me are Nioxin, Dutestaride and of course the Choi procedure, which I know, will provide me with something that I haven’t had in years, a new and natural looking hairline.

Week 14

Well, I can’t believe another whole week has gone by! Actually had someone make comment on my hair this week. They were trying to figure out what was different about it and to my surprise they said that it was maybe just because I had more of it. I kinda laughed to myself as they looked really puzzled and the great thing was that it came from a woman hahaha!! Things are going really well and just looking forward to the next couple of months going by and the rest of my newly implanted hair coming through.

Week 15

I was quite impressed with the top view of my head this week as you can clearly see where my new hairline is starting to fill in the thinning patch at my parting, its quite simply amazing. This is all my own hair with absolutely no trickery or thickening products being used so if you needed proof as to whether this procedure works I guess you’ve got it.

Week 16 Bonus Week!

Things are going great up top and had a haircut this week, which has helped even more in improving the appearance of my hair. My hairdresser has noticed the new hair coming through and is amazed by the fact that I have no scarring on the top of my head and how faint my scar on the back of my head is becoming. The picture of the top of my head again shows how my hairline is really starting to thicken up now!! FANTASTIC!!

Week 17 to Week 21

Week 17

Things are going from good to better! Everything feels great up top and excited about the progress! I’m really impressed with the texture and quality of my new hair and from talking to Andy Hunt know that I still have lots to come through yet. The Nioxin Shampoo and Scalp Therapy is brilliant and now had several comments on how well my hair is looking from people that have no idea that I’ve had a transplant.

Week 18

Oh my god! Just look at the top shot of my head and how thick my hair is starting to look! I’ve said it once, I’ve said it twice, O.K. I might have said it more than that, Nioxin, Dutestaride and the CHOI PROCEDURE!! These are the three things that have changed my life completely and believe in. The most brilliant thing about the Choi is that I have absolutely no scarring what so ever on my scalp, and the scar at the back of my head is really starting to fade away now!

Week 19

Took these pictures on my way out for a night out with some friends and really happy about how my hair is looking! Believe me when I tell you this, it’s amazing how your confidence and the way about how you feel about yourself changes. I haven’t felt this free from hair loss since before I discovered I was loosing my hair at 18years old.

Week 20

Had a wee haircut this week and my hairdresser was well impressed with the progress! He’s even talking about some new styles for Christmas, which is the time that I think the full results, will be most evident. I laughed as he said that he was going to have to charge me a bit more because I have more hair to cut now. Picked up some more Nioxin as my hairdresser stocks it, which is very handy.

Week 21

Well here we are another 5 weeks on and really pleased with the progress to date!! Had a chat with Andy Hunt today who told me that I should most likely still have about 50% of my new hair to come through yet! If that’s the case then I’m thinking of growing my hair, joining a peace camp and becoming a hippie! I used to get teased about my receding hairline but now people just look at me kind of puzzled trying to figure out what’s going on with my hair. I was on a works night out mid week in Manchester and one of my colleagues asked me in private if I had something done to my hair as I seemed to have much more of it, I laughed and ended up telling her about what I had done, she was well impressed. Thanks to all at the clinic for making such a difference to my life!

Week 22 to Week 26

Week 22

Can't quite believe how long it has been since having the Choi procedure done and how much thicker my hair is now. I'm really pleased with how things are progressing and if no more hair was to come through at this stage I'd still be over the moon. The results from this procedure have exceeded my wildest expectations and it's all thanks to the wonderful people at the clinic, thanks everyone!!

Week 23

As I look at the pictures for this week and compare them to the first week of the procedure I can't get over the change in my appearance! Is it just my own opinion or does anyone else think the same? Just want you all to know that my hair is completely natural and I'm not using any thickening sprays or camouflage of any kind. This is all my own hair and it's growing thicker every day and excited about having a natural hairline again. Funny come to think of it all the comments about my receding hairline have stopped and quite a few people are asking if I've had anything done to my hair as I seem to have more of it now!

Week 24

Week 24 already, how time fly’s! Well everything is still going well and seem to be getting better with every week that goes by. I’m still using the combination of Dutasteride and Nioxin Hair Care Range, which I believe has really got my hair loss completely under control and will let me retain most if not all of my existing hair. At least now I know that I have an alternative to going bald and should I require another procedure somewhere along the line, I wouldn’t hesitate to have this done again.

Week 25

Here we are another week on and have decided that I'm going to fly over to Athens again next month as I was disappointed that I never got to see more of the city and sample all the things that it has to offer. Also looking forward to meeting up with some of the people from the clinic and letting them see how much my hair has come on since my first trip back in May 2005.

Week 26

My God! I'm really impressed with the top view of my head this week and the other pictures look not too bad either if I may say so myself and I'm only talking about the hair hahaha! I'm really please how well my hair is looking as I fly out to Athens next week and rather looking forward to it. It will be nice to spend time catching up with everyone and taking in the sights. I'll let you all know how my trip to Athens went in my next set of updates, which I'll do sooner rather than later.

Week 27 to Week 33

Week 27

Well just back from Athens and had an amazing time out there catching up with everyone and meeting lots of really nice new people! Really please with how the hair is coming on and feel that I’m almost there with the full results, which as surpassed my wildest expectations. I think that the combination of my daily hair care regime using the Nioxin and taking the Dutasteride has really helped with the success of the whole process.

Week 28

Hair is getting long this week and may need to get down to see my hair stylist and get a trim. Not too sure as I’m considering growing it out and maybe trying a different style a bit later once I’m sure that all the new hair has come through. I can’t begin to tell you how much this whole experience has changed my outlook in life and how much happier I feel about everything.

Week 29

Where the heck has the time gone? Its almost scary how time has flown in since my procedure was done back in May. I like the top view of my head this week and to be honest, if no more hair was to come through at this stage, it wouldn’t worry me in the slightest. Funny though as I know there is still some stuff going on up there as I can feel bristle and little bumps where hair is still pushing through.

Week 30

Another week gone by and I feel like I just finished the last week’s update!! Went out with some friends last night and bumped into some people that I hadn’t seen since before I had the procedure and they thought that I was looking younger! It’s really funny when people look at you kind of confused trying to work out what’s different about you. My hair is looking and feeling healthier and thicker with each and every passing day.

Week 31

Wow, I’m impressed with the pictures this week and I think that you would have to agree that it looks like I now have a full head of hair and that most if not all traces of hair loss have now well and truly been erased. I hope that my Journal and the pictures of my progress will give hope to the many thousands of people who read my story and know that there really are some pretty amazing alternatives to baldness and it doesn’t have to be inevitable end to the process for people who discover that they are loosing their hair.

Week 32

Tend to think that I’m coming to the end of the process of recovery from my procedure and that the full results of my procedure are now almost if not completely apparent. My hair is feeling great and continue to use the Nioxin Shampoo and daily scalp therapy (Conditioner) as part of my daily hair care regime. Still using the Dutasteride and happy to say that I haven’t experienced any side effect from the medication what so ever.

Week 33

Well, I’m finally here! Its been over 6 months since I had the Choi procedure done and glad to be able to put my hand on my heart and tell you all that it was the best decision of my life and has been a life changing experience for me.
Please don’t sit around suffering in silence if hair loss is a problem that you suffer from as there are people that you can talk to and various options open to you that can change you life and give you the peace of mind that you seek.
I hope that you have found the diary of my post op progress to have been of assistance to you and wish you luck in your own personal quest for a solution to your particular hair loss problem.
